Calling all Land Girls, Your County needs You !
Staffordshire Women’s Food & Farming Union have been asked by the Directors of The National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire to manage a project to raise funds for a lasting tribute to the Women Land Army and honour their contribution to British Agriculture, during the war years. Members will be talking about their project to show goers next week on their show stand.
The WFU stand has been kindly sponsored by the Staffordshire NFU and will at the entrance of the NFU marquee at this year’s Staffordshire County Show, on Wednesday June 1st and Thursday June 2nd 2011.
‘With your help we can spread the word, that just small donation towards this worthy cause will add up to a great deal, within a very short time.’ said Julie Scott, Co-ordinator for the Women’s Land Army Tribute Project.
‘We have worked really hard as a branch to create a website specifically for the promotion of this cause, which details exactly how much money we are trying to raise. This lasting tribute which will, after consultation with some of the local original Land Girls, will take the form of a bronze statue of the iconic ‘Land Girl’ pose complete with pitch fork.’
‘We feel very passionate about the responsibility that has been bestowed upon us and that is why, we have chosen to launch this worthy cause at this year’s Staffordshire County Show,’ continued Julie.
‘We are really hoping that some of the original Land Girls, their daughters and granddaughters will seek us out to chat about the fond memories. There will also be an opportunity for former land girls to register an interest to attend the unveiling ceremony at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, Staffordshire.’
