Tuesday 5th July 2011 7pm- 9pm
Nick Davies from Hobsons Brewery took over The Sun Pub in Leintwardine in rural Herefordshire with the aim of preserving its character, but introducing new technology to make maximum use of green technologies. They decided to design a pavilion style building constructed of local sustainable timber and insulated to a very high standard. The timber building is linked to the original by means of a reclaimed brick/glass construction. In addition to the fabric of the building the following environmental and sustainable technologies are to be included in the design. These include:
- Ground/Air source heat pump for the primary heat, thus negating the requirement of Oil/Gas boiler.
- Heat recovery plant from the beer parlour store, all surplus heat to find its way to a central accumulator, 2500 litres of varying temperature hot water.
- Underfloor heating and sympathetic block low level radiators.
- Rain water harvesting and storage for toilet flush.
- Hot Water Solar heating, providing additional hot supply to accumulator.
- Large open fireplace with back boiler and stack collector for hot water.
- We are also hopeful of utilizing a system of Photovoltaic cells to generate our own electricity.
In addition the team has increased insulation, draft-proofing and low energy lighting where appropriate. All of this is enabling them to meet their desires of creating a carbon neutral village pub.
