Hubs Help Farmers to Get To Grips with NVZ Forms

Published on Thursday 29 Oct 2009 by All Hubs

We are running a series of hands on Environment Agency form filling days for West Midlands livestock farmers, to get to grips with the high level of record keeping the new NVZ action programme demands. These EA sessions are very different. Each farmer is asked to bring their own paperwork and specific farm information on the day to begin their form filling. Each session will be led by Environment Agency experts and cover some step by step calculations that each farmer needs to do to comply with the regulations.

There are nine guidance booklets so there’s a lot for a farmer to get to grips with. Farmers attending the sessions will work through standard values you need to complete the manure output, storage and nitrogen content calculations and figures showing the NMAX limits. There are a lot of calculations to be done, working out the quantity of manure the holding is producing, how much needs to be stored, what constitutes slurry and benefits of introducing better separation of washings and run off”. Calculations will be highly individual to each farm and this is the reason for bringing your individual farm information with you.  By January 2012, rules require at least six months’ storage capacity for poultry manures and pig slurry, at least five months’ capacity for other types of livestock manure. Farmers will have to work out the calculations on how much storage they need.
