Sensory Rich Farm Visits for Disabled and Disengaged Visitors
Have you ever considered hosting farm visits for disabled and disengaged visitors? Ever marvelled at the power of the countryside to enhance people’s lives? Do you want to share your passion for farming and the countryside and help visitors connect with the natural world? If so then this FREE workshop is for you!
LEAF are organising this FREE workshop, offering farmers from across the West Midlands region, the opportunity to learn how to host sensory rich visits for mobility and sensory impaired visitors.
When and where:
April 14th 2011
at
Near Hales, Shropshire
The workshop will run from 9.00am – 4.30pm and will include lunch. (There will also be a follow-up half-day workshop in July, to share experiences from hosting visits.)
What the course involves:
Group discussions, presentations and interactive activities including:
• Developing a sensory map of your farm so you can deliver a visitor experience that
reaches all our senses - taste, touch, sound, sight and smell
• A session on best practice in health and safety and risk assessment (including a risk
assessment template developed in close consultation by HSE)
• Information on conducting a simple access review around your farm, and suggested
ways for you to improve access for disabled visitors
• How to develop your own action plan to help you organise and deliver a visit for a
disabled groups over the summer, with a half day follow-up workshop in July to
share experiences and activity ideas
• Sharing lessons from the Let Nature Feed Your Senses project
(www.letnaturefeedyoursenses.org) to enable you to deliver visits that engage all
the senses and communicate the links between nature, food, and farming
• A creative delegate pack including technical sheets relating to wheelchair access,
ideas for making home-made ‘discovery bags’ and activity sheets
What you will learn.
The training will give you:
• Increased confidence to prepare for and deliver sensory rich farm visits for
disabled and disengaged community groups
• Increased awareness of best practice in risk assessment, access reviews and
sensory mapping techniques
• Improved understanding of ways to increase visitors’ appreciation of nature,
food and farming
• Lots of ideas on fun and engaging activities that will get visitors involved and
inspired!
• And hopefully the momentum, confidence and enthusiasm to host many more
successful visits to your farm.
