Sheepdog and Handler Training Course

Walford and North Shropshire College is going to deliver a Sheepdog and Handler training course, this will consist of six half day sessions, done on a one to one and interactive basis, the sessions will be delivered over a 12 week period, by Hugh Francis at Penllwyn,Llanfyllin, Powys, SY22 5EW.

The first session will be on Thursday 1st December 2011 at 12.30pm, with a further session every fortnight, this will ensure that progress of both handler and dog are monitored and ensuring that any problems arising are addressed.

All beneficiaries will receive a copy of the International Sheep Dog Society’s “Training a Sheep dog, A Guide for the New Handler” booklet.   The booklet has been designed to support the practical training course and includes all the basic tasks that are required, for the management of a flock of sheep.

The emphasis of the training is on the handler as most dogs have an idea this is known as “showing an Interest” therefore the responsibility of the trained handler is to maximise that interest.

Some of the topics that will be included in are course are:-
• Commands
• The Return
• Gathering sheep
• Flanking
• Circling the sheep
• The Drive and shedding.


The total cost for the six sessions is £71.10 per person.
Places are limited so bookings will be on a first come first served basis.
