Three Peaks Challenge – Kidney Research UK

Published on Monday 7 Jun 2010 by Shropshire Rural Hub

Tom Downes, one of the Steering Group members of the Shropshire Rural Hub, and 14 friends are undertaking a challenge in order to raise money for Kidney Research UK. They are aiming to climb Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours.

Tom, whose family farm just north of Shrewsbury, had kidney problems since birth. By 16, his condition had reached the point where he either needed a transplant or dialysis. However, the kidney donated by his father has completely changed his life. Today, he is living a normal, healthy life like any other person. According to Tom, ‘We were operated on in the summer of 1999, I literally woke up from the operation feeling like a different person. Both Dad and I were just about recovered by harvest!’

At the end of the challenge, Tom and his friends aim to reach their target amount which is £5000 funding. ‘I have had exemplary care from health staff through out my life and now seems as good as a time as any to try to give something back’ said Tom. ‘Oswestry School have kindly agreed to provide us with two minibuses free of charge. The walking team are funding expenses themselves so that all funds raised go to Kidney Research’.

The money raised from this event will provide vital research funding in the prevention of kidney diseases.
