Workshops on Sustainable Soil Management

Published on Tuesday 25 May 2010 by Worcestershire Rural Hub

With increasing fertilizer costs and tougher legislation over nitrate pollution, green manures are set to play an important role in the future of soil fertility on both organic and conventional farms.

Garden Organic (formerly HDRA) has conducted over 15 years of research on green manures and cover crops, and we will be drawing on this expertise to conduct a series of workshops funded by Lantra.

They should answer many of the questions farmers and growers are asking, such as:

• Which species and variety is most suitable?
• How can nutrients be targeted to the next crop?
• How can I prevent nutrient leaching?
• What are the options within environmental stewardship schemes?
• What are the future environmental and financial implications?

There will be two workshops repeated at three locations:

Workshop 1: How to Manage Green Manures to Benefit your Soil
Warwickshire (Mon 14 June), Shropshire (Tues 15 June), Herefordshire (Wed 16 June)

Workshop 2: Green Manures and Nutrient Management
Warwickshire (Mon 2 Aug), Shropshire (Tues 3 Aug), Herefordshire (Wed 4 Aug)

All events 10am – 4pm, cost £20 including lunch.
